ADOPTION FEE: Puppies & Adults - $600
Generally, puppies and adult dogs have an adoption fee of $600; senior dogs have an adoption fee of $350. However, fees are at the discretion of the rescue, as some may be higher to offset the medical costs of the dog or some of our emergency cases. (The standard adoption fees covers only a portion of the expense the rescue spends on the medical care, housing, and transport of each rescue dog.)
Lucky Dog Refuge provides spay and neuters for dogs over 8 months of age at the time of adoption and all age-appropriate core vaccines up until the point of adoption. Adopters must assume all medical costs after adoption.
Core vaccines for dogs include: canine parvovirus, distemper, canine hepatitis and rabies. Non-core vaccines (such a Leptospirosis and Lyme) are given at the adopter’s expense & discretion depending on the dog's exposure risk.
You must be at least 21 years old to adopt a Lucky Dog.
Please review and fill out the application carefully. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
Adoption Process
Application The minimum age to adopt a dog from Lucky Dog Refuge is 21 years old. If you are in our coverage area (100 miles of Stamford, Connecticut 06902), the next step is to fill out our online application here: LDR Adoption Application. Please note that we receive many applications and it may take up to a week to get a response. |
Home Photos If your application is selected as a possible adopter, a representative from Lucky Dog Refuge will reach out to you and request photos of your home and outdoor property. We are just looking to confirm that the home layout and occupancy is safe for the dog and fits any personality and exercise requirements or restrictions he or she may have. |
Reference Checks We require three personal references that we will call on your behalf. Additionally - if you currently or have previously owned a pet, we require a veterinary reference. The application must also indicate if any animals now or previously owned by the applicant have been kept up to date on vaccinations and have received a veterinary examination at least annually and otherwise as-needed. |
Adoption If both you and the Refuge decide the dog is a good fit, you will receive an Adoption Contract for signature and the fee must be paid upon signing. A time will be scheduled for you to pick up the dog. The dog will only be allowed to leave the Refuge after the Adoption Contract has been signed and full payment has been received. Adopters must bring a leash, collar, and tag when picking up the dog. |
Meet and Greet Once your application has been reviewed, home photos received, and references checked and approved, the next step is a meet and greet with the dog and your family (including any resident dogs). The meet and greet will take place at Lucky Dog Refuge or another agreed upon location. |
Keep in touch! Lucky Dogs are like family to us so we would love to keep in touch with you and your dog throughout his or her journey. Please be share photos and anecdotes that we can share on our social media and website… and just for our own enjoyment! |
What If It Doesn’t Work Out?
While we hope that every dog finds his/her forever home the first time, sometimes life gets in the way. If for some reason the adoption does not work out, the dog MUST be returned to Lucky Dog Refuge directly. Adoption fees are non-refundable; however, special consideration can be made at the Refuge’s discretion for extenuating circumstances.
