“We have fostered several dogs for Lucky Dog Refuge and have had such a great experience! We have two cats and they take great care to match us with dogs that are cat friendly and a good fit for our home. LDR provides all the food, treats, toys, and everything their precious pups need for their time with us until they find their forever homes. It’s hard to say goodbye, but so rewarding knowing the love you gave helped them on their journey home.”

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I expect a foster dog to stay with me?
While we prefer for dogs to stay in their foster homes until they are adopted, we do accept short-term fosters and will of course bring the dog back to the rescue should it not work out.
The length of a foster stay varies; it could be days, weeks, or even months before a dog is adopted.

How do I get approved to be a foster?
After you submit an application, it will be reviewed by Lucky Dog Refuge staff. Someone from the team will reach out with foster options that match your application. Please be detailed on your application about all persons and pets residing in the home so we can match you with the appropriate foster dog.
Once your application has been approved foster, a foster waiver will be sent via Docusign and must be signed prior to fostering the dog.

Do I have to have a house with a fenced in yard to foster a Lucky Dog?
We foster to various types of residences - apartments and houses with or without yards - and will match a dog appropriately based on where the foster lives and lifestyle, as described in the application.
Can I foster if I do not live near Stamford, CT?
Because dogs need to go to vet appointments and/or meet and greets frequently, it is preferred that fosters be located within 25 miles of Stamford, CT.
We appreciate it if fosters are able to bring the dog to vet appointments or meet and greets, but Lucky Dog Refuge staff are happy to pick up the dog as needed.

What supplies will I need to get in advance?
We send foster dogs home with food, a bed, a crate, medications, an Apple Airtag, and anything else they might need.
Can I foster a dog first and then adopt?
While there are times when a foster falls in love and adopts the dog - which is great! - the foster program is not meant to be a foster-to-adopt trial.
